The Trip

In this musical journey, we delve into a curated selection of iconic tracks that exemplify the depth and richness of Brazilian music. Besides classic hits to hidden gems, each song offers a unique glimpse into the soul of Brazil and the talents of its legendary musicians. Therefore we mixed a blend of traditional and modern elements, reflecting the evolution of Brazilian music.

 

The Story

Tudo Bem – Trio Mocoto
Trio Mocotó is a legendary Brazilian musical group known for their influential contributions to the genres of samba rock, funk, and soul. Formed in São Paulo in the late 1960s, the trio consists of percussionists Fritz Escovão, Nereu Gargalo, and João Parahyba. Their pioneering work has earned them widespread acclaim, making them icons of Brazilian music and inspiring generations of musicians worldwide.

Escorpião – Carlos Dafé
Released in the 1970s, it exemplifies the fusion of samba, funk, and soul that characterized Dafé’s style. He gained prominence during the 1970s, a period marked by a vibrant fusion of Brazilian rhythms with international influences like funk, soul, and jazz. Dafé’s music often explores themes of love, social consciousness, and personal introspection, characterized by his smooth vocals and sophisticated arrangements.

Bis – Arthur Verocai, Azymuth
A collaborative album between Brazilian artists Arthur Verocai and Azymuth, released in 2009. The album brings together Verocai’s expertise as an arranger and composer with Azymuth’s renowned fusion of jazz, funk, and Brazilian rhythms. “Bis” stands as a testament to the enduring creativity and innovation of Brazilian music.

Neguinho Poeta – Bebeto
Born Gilberto Alves in Rio de Janeiro, Bebeto began his musical career at a young age, learning to play percussion instruments and immersing himself in the vibrant samba and pagode scenes of his hometown. He was a key player in the popularization of samba-rock, a genre that fuses traditional samba rhythms with elements of funk and rock music.

O Galo Canta, o Macaco Assovia – Messias Holanda
The title translates to “The Rooster Crows, the Monkey Whistles” in English. This song is often performed during traditional Brazilian festivities, particularly during Carnival celebrations. Messias Holanda, the composer of the song, is a respected figure in Brazilian music, known for his contributions to traditional Northeastern Brazilian music styles such as forró and baião. “O Galo Canta, o Macaco Assovia” remains a popular and enduring song in Brazilian culture, cherished for its infectious rhythm and joyful spirit.

A Gira – Trio Ternura
Released in the early 1970s, the song became a hit in Brazil and gained international recognition. The song is characterized by its infectious rhythm, soulful vocals, and catchy melody. It blends elements of samba, funk, and soul, creating a lively and danceable track that captivates listeners. “A Gira” is often associated with the Afro-Brazilian religious tradition of Umbanda, as its lyrics reference spiritual themes and rituals.

Beira D’Água (A Festa) – Marku Ribas, Erasmo Carlos
The song was released in the early 1970s and quickly became a hit in Brazil. Marku Ribas, a talented multi-instrumentalist and composer, infuses his unique blend of Afro-Brazilian rhythms, funk, and rock influences. Erasmo Carlos, a legendary Brazilian musician known as the “Tremendão,” lends his distinctive voice to the track, adding depth and richness to the collaborative effort.

Tenha Fé, Pois Amanhã um Lindo Dia Vai Nascer – Os Originais Do Samba
Renowned for their vibrant performances and infectious rhythms, the group played a significant role in popularizing samba music both in Brazil and internationally. Formed by a collective of talented musicians, including Mestre Fuleiro, Mussum, and Bigode, Os Originais do Samba quickly gained popularity for their dynamic stage presence and innovative approach to samba music.

Maracatu Atômico – Gilberto Gil
Released in 1973 as part of Gil’s album “Expresso 2222,” the song quickly became a landmark in Brazilian music, blending traditional rhythms with experimental sounds and political themes. A traditional rhythm from the northeastern region of Brazil, with elements of rock, funk, and psychedelia. The song’s infectious groove and energetic instrumentation, including driving percussion and electric guitar riffs, create a dynamic and hypnotic listening experience.

Bons Momentos – Serginho Meriti
Meriti began his musical career in the 1960s, initially performing as a percussionist in various samba groups before transitioning to singing and songwriting. Throughout his career, Meriti released numerous albums and singles, showcasing his talent for composing catchy melodies and heartfelt lyrics that resonate with audiences.

Nereci – Djavan, Marizinha
Nereci“ is a Brazilian song performed by Djavan in collaboration with Marizinha. Djavan, a renowned Brazilian singer, songwriter, and guitarist, is known for his distinctive voice and innovative blend of MPB (Música Popular Brasileira), samba, jazz, and bossa nova styles. The song was released in 1980 as part of Djavan’s album “Luz.”

Ela Disse Sim – Ed Motta
Released in 1997 as part of Motta’s album “Manual Prático Para Festas, Bailes e Afins, Vol. 1” the song quickly became one of his signature tracks. Known for his soulful voice and eclectic musical style, Ed Motta infuses “Ela Disse Sim” with a mix of funk, soul, and jazz influences. The song features lush instrumentation, including smooth guitar riffs, funky basslines, and vibrant horns, creating a rich and dynamic sound.

Pernalonga – Di Melo
Di Melo gained wider recognition in the 1970s with the release of his self-titled album “Di Melo” in 1975. The album featured a fusion of Brazilian rhythms, funk, and soul, showcasing Di Melo’s smooth vocals and charismatic stage presence.

Cabelo Pixaim – Emílio Santiago
It celebrate the beauty and uniqueness of Afro-Brazilian culture, specifically referencing the hairstyle mentioned in the title. The song’s upbeat tempo and infectious rhythm invite listeners to dance while embracing their cultural heritage.

O Descobridor Dos Sete Mares – Tim Maia
The legendary singer Tim Maia. Released in 1983. The song is one of Tim Maia’s most iconic hits and remains a classic in Brazilian popular music. Composed by Márcio Leonardo, Jorge Amiden, and Beto Cajueiro, features a lively blend of funk, soul, and pop elements, characteristic of Tim Maia’s eclectic musical style. The song’s infectious rhythm, catchy melody, and Maia’s powerful vocals contributed to its widespread popularity.

A.E.I.O.U. – Di Melo, Cotonete

Agora É Moda – Rita Lee
Released in 1978, the song is part of her album “Babilônia”. Known for her bold and rebellious style, Rita Lee infuses “Agora É Moda” with her trademark blend of rock, pop, and Brazilian influences.
